Internet Blog and Email Safety

Should I allow my child to have their own email account?

B It's a difficult decision whether your child should have their own email account. A big consideration is both your child's age and maturity. You need to check your entire child's email on regular basis. Yahoo has a way you can receive an email every time your child receives an email. First, decide on an email address with your child. Do not allow your child to use their own name as an email address because of identity theft. Next, decide on a password both of you can remember. Explain to your child they cannot change their password without your permission. Don't use a password such as a pet's name, your child's name, birthdates or something easy to guess. Tell your child not to share their password with any friends. Emphasize even if the friend is a best friend.

Should I allow my child to use yahoo messenger or Aim or a similar service?

Only allow them to do it with someone you know. Remind them not to talk about something that's really personal.

Should I allow my child to have a blog?

My daughter is allowed to have a blog, but we have several rules. She's not allowed to press the publish button until I've read the posts. I allow her to have a blog because it gives her a chance to practice writing and allows her to research things to blog. Her blog is educational and fun for her too.

How do I monitor my child's comments on their blog?

Tell your child you must okay all comments and answers to comments. Blogger allows you to receive an email every time someone comments on the blog.

Am I being nosy by knowing my child's email address and passwords?

Being nosy is part of being a parent. We need this information to keep children safe.
